Pin curls are becoming increasingly popular, especially with short hair cuts. These curls were the ideal style in the fifties and made another comeback in the late sixties. Now the use of pin curls is quickly rising to create the deep curls and waves that are so popular in this day and age. More and more Hollywood stars are being seen on the red carpet wearing these curls!
Pin curls work with all hair lengths and hair textures. Layered locks are especially easy to create pin curls in. There are several different types of pin curls. The most basic and original pin curl lays flat against the scalp and is slept in overnight. They are fairly quick to create with ease and the finished style is a classic, elegant look. They’re great for those who want curls occasionally, but not enough to invest in a professional curling iron .
To create this sophisticated style, you will need a curl enhancing gel, a rat tail comb, a large amount of bobby pins (two per curl), and hairspray.
1. Wash and Towel Dry
If you prefer to work with dry hair, this is possible but will take a little more time and produce a looser curl. Brush the hair to remove all tangles. Use the comb to create a wide part on either side of the head.
2. Section
Instead of sectioning the hair off in traditional methods, you will work from the hairline to the nape of the neck from ear to ear in ˝ inch wide sections.
3. Prepare your Hair
Starting in the center of the hairline, use the end of the comb to create a ˝ inch strand of hair. Spray liberally with hairspray and comb smooth. This will create a small curl. To create a larger curl, choose a section of hair that is about one inch thick.
4. Start
Place your fingertip on the strand near the scalp. Use your free hand to wind the strand into a curl around your fingertip all the way to the end. Be very careful not to twist the strand and to make sure that the curl is wound flat at the scalp. Pin in place with two bobby pins to form an X over the curl.
5. Wind
You will continue like this until there is a line of curls around the hairline. Then move to the next section behind the pin curls. Continue working back until all of the hair is curled.
6. Set
Now spray the pinned curls in again with the hairspray. You can sleep in the curls overnight to create very tight curls. To produce a looser curl, keep them pinned in place for a minimum of four hours. For a very quick curl, dry the curls completely with the low heat setting on a blow dryer . However, keep in mind that the curls will be much looser and will not last as long.
7. Release
Remove the pins from the curls. Always begin with the front section of hair (the hair you began with).
8. Finish
Use your fingers to work the curls into place and apply a little more hair spray. Now admire your gorgeous pin curls!
Any length of hair can be used to create this style. For longer styles, you will stretch the curl out with your fingers when the pins are removed. Just grab the ends and pull down.
You can also create loose waves with this style. After removing the pins, flip your hair over and brush repeatedly to loosen the curls. Then flip the hair upright and use your fingers to shape the waves into place. This timeless style will add volume to any head of hair. Wear it up or down for any occasion!
