For those of us with fine hair it can seem impossible to measure up to the women blessed with voluminous waves and curls. But these do’s and don’ts can help shape up your limp, hard-to-style locks into more styles than you knew were possible. And as for volume, do we have some secrets for you! So don’t settle for the same old style. Follow this advice to get your hair looking its best.
DO try a heavy bang. They look great on fine-haired women and give the illusion of volume.
DON’T wear hair too long. Hair too long can leave hair looking thin and stringy.
DO experiment with color! Coloring and highlight processes can help plump up the hair follicle, for a fuller look. So don’t be afraid to add some color to help create the illusion of vivacious volume, without the hassle of taming it every morning! Hint – darker colors tend to look thicker than lighter colors.
DON’T razor-cut your hair. This takes away volume and leaves hair even thinner than before.
DO try a perm! Today’s perms won’t end up looking like a mess of curls – they’ll add volume and shine to help plump up your limp locks!
DON’T over do it with chemical treatments. Coloring and retexurizing processes can be great for thin hair, but don’t forget that this hair type is more susceptible to damage than normal or thick hair types. No use substituting thin hair for damaged hair!
DO experiment with a pixie cut! It’s a daring move to be sure, and only go for it if you’ve got the right face shape for it – but this style can add the appearance of incredible volume! Sharon Stone is a great example of this – you’d never know she struggles with fine hair because she always looks stunning!
DON’T settle for an average blunt cut. There are lots of possible styles for fine hair, and layers are important in just about all of them! Find a stylist who knows how to work with fine hair and discuss your next look!
DO use a volumizing shampoo. You’d be surprised how well some professional hair products really work!
DON’T use a rinse out conditioner. This is a necessity for smoothing thick and curly hair, but it tends to weigh down thin hair. Try a light weight leave in product instead, like Hana Shine Shield !
DO air dry. It’s not always the most convenient option but when you can find the time, you’ll love the volume you can achieve naturally!
DON’T use a heavy hair spray. Too much product will weigh down fine hair, leaving you with a dull flat look. What’s worse, hair spray will hold that style all day!
